Strength doesn’t always look like winning.

Sometimes it simply looks like getting up and taking one more step.

Singer-songwriter Lee Newton explores that quieter kind of courage in the official music video for “Strength of a Woman,” a song built around resilience, compassion and the power women can find in supporting one another.

Premiered by American Country Network, the video brings attention to difficult realities facing women and families, including childhood cancer, homelessness and domestic violence. Rather than treating strength as something abstract, Newton uses those stories to show the different forms perseverance can take when life doesn’t cooperate with the plans.

For Newton, the message comes from personal experience.

“‘Strength of a Woman’ came from a very personal place for me, inspired by my own experiences, the challenges I’ve faced, and the times I’ve had to find the strength to keep going,” Newton said.

But she didn’t want the song to remain exclusively her story.

Newton says she hopes women facing their own struggles can recognize themselves in it, whether their version of strength means beginning again or simply making it through another day.

“Sometimes it’s starting over, sometimes it’s simply taking one more step,” she said. “I hope that ‘Strength of a Woman’ reminds every woman that no matter what chapter she’s in, her story isn’t over.”

That message sits at the heart of both the song and its video: difficult circumstances may become part of someone’s story without being allowed to write the ending.

An acoustic version of “Strength of a Woman” also appears on Newton’s recent album Beautifully Undone. The project revisits songs from throughout her career with stripped-down arrangements intended to place greater emphasis on the lyrics, musicianship and stories behind them.

American Country Network is airing the “Strength of a Woman” video throughout the week of October 5–11.

Country music has always been at its best when the story matters more than the decoration around it.

With “Strength of a Woman,” Newton’s message is a simple one.

Strength doesn’t always roar.

Sometimes it just keeps going.
