Mattie Taylor has released the official music video for “Pushing 20,” a country-pop single about the confusion, responsibilities and occasional disasters that come with becoming an adult.
Apparently, turning 20 doesn’t come with an instruction manual.
Or a functioning bank account.
The Nashville singer-songwriter brings the song’s relatable lyrics to life in a video produced by Justin Mayotte of SqueeksOnTour, exploring everything from broken guitar strings and mood swings to unexpected bills, car trouble and the realization that adulthood involves considerably more paperwork than anyone warned us about.
Taylor originally wrote “Pushing 20” with Mariah Dion when both were 19, capturing the uncertainty of leaving their teenage years behind while still trying to figure out who they were becoming.
Now 21, Taylor admits that two additional years haven’t necessarily provided all the answers.
“You don’t suddenly wake up one day and feel like an adult,” Taylor explained. “You’re still figuring out who you are while life keeps moving forward, and sometimes all you can do is pull it together and enjoy the ride.”
Welcome to adulthood, Mattie. Some of us have been waiting decades for that feeling to kick in.
The song was produced by Justin Wantz at Justin Wantz Productions, with Wantz handling instrumentation, mixing and mastering. Its country-pop arrangement provides a backdrop for lyrics that balance humor with the very real anxiety of growing responsibilities.
Rather than presenting adulthood as some grand transformation, “Pushing 20” focuses on the smaller moments that make growing up feel overwhelming.
A broken guitar string. An unexpected expense. A car that suddenly stops cooperating.
Individually, they’re inconveniences. Together, they’re apparently the official welcome package.
For Taylor, the music video offers an opportunity to bring those experiences to life while reminding listeners that uncertainty is a normal part of the process.
And that’s where the song finds its strength.
Growing up isn’t necessarily about having everything figured out. Sometimes it’s simply about learning to handle whatever comes next, even when the bank account disagrees.
“Pushing 20” and its official music video are available now.
