Stephanie Rabus has found a possible cure for a cheating ex. Apparently it involves Cabo, margaritas and a sufficiently impressive ocean view.
The Nashville-based singer-songwriter has released the official music video for her current single, “Payback’s A Beach,” following its premiere on RFD-TV. Written by Rabus with Mark Roma and Corey Lee Barker, the song takes the traditional country breakup and sends it somewhere with considerably better weather.
Rather than spending three minutes wondering where the relationship went wrong, Rabus heads for the beach. The song’s revenge strategy is relatively straightforward: move on, have fun and make sure the person who caused the heartbreak knows you’re doing just fine without them.
Rabus says her father dubbed the sound “Calypso Country,” which seems appropriate for a breakup song populated by margaritas, cabana boys and sunshine. She also wanted the release to serve as one final taste of summer before the annual invasion of pumpkin spice begins.
Underneath the humor, “Payback’s A Beach” turns one of country’s oldest subjects, betrayal, into something considerably less miserable. There’s no begging for another chance or staring at an empty barstool here. Rabus’ version of heartbreak recovery comes with sand between your toes and the realization that getting caught cheating may have accidentally financed somebody else’s vacation.
That’s one way to split the assets.
Originally from St. Louis and now based in Nashville, Rabus brings together country, pop, soul and rock influences shaped by artists ranging from Martina McBride and Shania Twain to Whitney Houston, Pat Benatar and Evanescence. Her live résumé has also put her on stages alongside artists including Bryan White, Toby Keith, Lonestar, Lee Brice, Cassadee Pope and Lindsey Ell.
“Payback’s A Beach” is available now.
