Twenty years later, GWAR is heading back to Hell. Apparently, the first trip didn’t take.
The shock-rock veterans are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 2006 album Beyond Hell with a newly remastered deluxe edition arriving September 25 through the band’s Pit Records. Ahead of the release, GWAR has unveiled an HD version of the music video for its cover of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out.”
The original Beyond Hell was produced by Devin Townsend, bringing together two creative forces that were probably never in serious danger of making a quiet, sensible record. Built around GWAR’s journey into Hell to rescue Flattus Maximus, the album includes “War Is All We Know,” “Tormentor,” “The Ultimate Bohab,” “Back in Crack” and the band’s suitably unsubtle take on Cooper’s classic.
Paul Logus, whose credits include Anthrax and Killswitch Engage, handled the new remaster. The deluxe edition also digs into the original sessions for a previously unreleased outro and marks the album’s first appearance on vinyl.
Naturally, because this is GWAR, simply putting the record on vinyl wasn’t enough. The 180-gram edition comes in a tri-fold jacket that unfolds into an inverted cross. Both the standard 2,000-copy gold pressing and limited “Blood Moon” and “Blood Smear” variants have already sold out. Somewhere, a marketing department just quietly admitted defeat.
GWAR will follow the anniversary release by getting back to considerably messier business on the Gor Gor Must Die! Tour beginning October 27, with Midnight providing direct support, Mac Sabbath opening each night and X-COPS appearing on select dates.
Twenty years after Beyond Hell, GWAR hasn’t exactly mellowed with age. Then again, nobody was really asking them to.
