Some songs are difficult to cover because everybody knows them. “Together Again” comes with the added complication that your father wrote and recorded the definitive version.

Johnny Owens, the youngest son of Country Music Hall of Famer Buck Owens, has released his interpretation of “Together Again,” continuing a project dedicated to preserving his father’s music and the Bakersfield Sound that helped reshape country music. The new single follows Johnny’s earlier release of “Act Naturally” and will be included on an upcoming 10-track tribute album featuring material from throughout Buck’s career.

Originally released by Buck Owens in 1964, “Together Again” became one of his signature recordings and a country standard. For Johnny, however, revisiting the song carries considerably more weight than digging through a legendary catalog. Twenty years after his father’s death, he’s singing music that was quite literally part of the family business.

The forthcoming album will also include classics such as “Big in Vegas” and “Streets of Bakersfield,” with Johnny approaching the project not as an attempt to replace or reinvent Buck, but to keep the songs, and the unmistakable Bakersfield sound behind them, in circulation for another generation.

Country music spends a lot of time talking about authenticity. Johnny Owens had the unusual experience of growing up in the house with it.

“Together Again” is available now across streaming platforms.
