Singer-songwriter Makenzie Phipps has teamed up with fellow The Voice alum Aubrey Nicole for “Devil Ain’t In Hell,” a fiery new country collaboration built around a southwestern, cosmic-country sound, plenty of guitar, and the unfortunate realization that sometimes the red flags aren’t pointing toward the underworld, they’re sitting across from you at dinner.
Phipps and Nicole bring plenty of attitude to the track, leaning into the time-honored country tradition of turning questionable romantic decisions into considerably better songs. And really, where would country music be without that particular business model?
For Phipps, the release follows the more reflective “Won’t Be Here Forever,” a song she wrote as a tribute to her mother, Angel. The contrast shows another side of the singer-songwriter: from reminding listeners to hold tightly to the people who matter to suggesting they run like hell from the ones who don’t.
