Unholy Altar Opens the Gates with New BLKIIBLK Record Deal

Philadelphia black metal outfit Unholy Altar has officially signed with BLKIIBLK, announcing the partnership just in time for Samhain.

Because apparently Halloween wasn’t dark enough already.

Formed in 2021, the five-piece band has spent the past several years building its reputation in the underground metal scene, combining the raw aggression of traditional black metal with an increasingly atmospheric and distinctive sound.

The lineup consists of Desecrator on vocals, Miserer and Eagle Devouring Snake on guitars, Cadaver on bass, and Lucifer’s Rage on drums.

Those are stage names that suggest nobody is particularly interested in being mistaken for the opening act at a neighborhood coffeehouse.

Unholy Altar’s earlier recordings drew heavily from the cold, abrasive traditions of second-wave black metal. But releases including 2024’s Veil of Death! Shroud of Night and 2025’s A Sullen Dark Sky demonstrated a band developing beyond its initial influences.

Atmosphere, pacing and musical identity have become increasingly important alongside the aggression that first defined its sound.

Now, the band is preparing to take that evolution into its next chapter.

“We are pleased to announce that UNHOLY ALTAR has joined forces with BLKIIBLK Records,” the group said. “A new chapter begins, and with it comes our darkest offering yet. The gates have opened.”

Subtle announcement. Very understated.

BLKIIBLK label head and Frontiers Label Group Global Head of A&R Mike Gitter sees the signing as an opportunity to build on the band’s growing underground reputation.

Gitter praised Unholy Altar’s combination of traditional metal influences and its own unsettling atmosphere, describing the group as dangerous, evocative and genuinely disturbing.

In black metal, those are apparently excellent performance reviews.

The band’s momentum has been building through appearances at Decibel Metal & Beer Festival, Canada’s Prepare the Ground and performances alongside Worm, Mortician and Crypta.

A 2025 European tour, including Belgium’s Tumult Festival, further expanded its international presence.

That growth continues in 2027 with appearances at Seattle’s Northwest Terror Fest, May 6–8, alongside Napalm Death, Artificial Brain and Deadguy, followed by Maryland Deathfest on May 30.

For a band that emerged from Philadelphia’s underground only five years ago, the move to BLKIIBLK represents another significant step forward.

The challenge now is maintaining the identity that earned Unholy Altar its following while reaching a larger audience.

Fortunately, judging by the band’s announcement, nobody seems particularly concerned about making the music more approachable.

The gates have opened.

And apparently the welcome committee isn’t taking reservations.
